The Obas – Headdress

Media: Fabricated costume and headdress from repurposed clothing/fabric, found metal, wire, used Victorian rug,
Dimensions: Life size

Fabricated from repurposed clothing, the dresses reference the late nineteenth century royal court styles of the European nations that colonized Africa. And a series of constructed headdresses inspired by African traditional headdresses

This headpiece replaces the heads of the figures, thus creating a hybridized or syncretic collapse between 19th century Western and African mythology.
